The Best Essential Oils for Health and Wellbeing

The benefits of using essential oils is endless, and the choice is extensive, but we’ve recommended some of our favourites that cover the most popular uses for essential oils

Essential oils have a long history of healing people of all sorts of ailments and conditions, but more of us are now choosing to inhale their aromas when we feel we need to calm our body and mind, and nourish our wellbeing - whether it’s due to illness, stress, digestive issues, fatigue or trouble sleeping.

The benefits of using essential oils is endless, and the choice is extensive, but we’ve recommended some of our favourites below that cover the most popular uses for essential oils. All the oils mentioned are included in the blends of our
Essential Wellness Range at Geo Mitchell, so we can personally vouch for each one. While some can be applied to the skin, we create our blends to be inhaled through a diffuser so that you can breathe in the benefits and improve your wellbeing at home.

Relaxation and de-stressing

Lavender

Lavender comes from the flower of the lavender plant and is known for being the perfect relaxation aid and one of the most loved and best essential oils out there. Its anti-microbial and anti-biotic properties make it an ideal oil to place on the skin for infections or burns, but when inhaled its scent can help reduce anxiety and emotional stress, improve sleep and alleviate headaches. Adding a few drops to your wrist and neck (almost like you would perfume) or on your pillow at night are great ways to feel the wonderful benefits of Lavender.

Petitgrain

This is a much less known essential oil than Lavender, but its healing properties should not be underestimated. Extracted from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree, Petitgrain is renowned for being a great anti-depressant, due to its soothing aroma and ability to relax the body. It’s one of the best essential oils for sleep, as it helps to relax your nervous system and muscles when you are going through a stressful or anxious period, or if you’re feeling irritable or angry.

Balance and clarity

Geranium

When you feel off balance and in need of some calm in your life, geranium oil is perfect for calming emotions and anxiety. It’s common for many of us to feel overwhelmed at times with our personal circumstances, and this oil can reduce inflammation in the body due to stress, balance hormones, encourage positivity and improve skin complaints. For women with hormonal issues or going through the menopause, geranium is one of the best essential oils for helping the body to regain balance. The scent of geranium will relax your mind and allow you to reclaim clarity and focus in your life.

Clary Sage

This essential oil has a long history of being a wonderful medicinal plant, and is regarded as a highly beneficial oil for almost any complaint. If you are going through hormonal changes, suffer with digestive problems, struggle with depression and anxiety, or have a bacterial infection of some kind, this oil will be a particularly great remedy for you. Clary Sage oil is extracted from the buds and leaves of the plant, and when inhaled is excellent at calming the nervous system and bringing the body back to a balanced state, whether that’s your hormones, digestive system or anxiety.

Stimulation and energy

Lemon

You might be more used to squeezing lemon on your salad or adding a slice to your water, but in essential oil form the lemon oil comes from the cold pressing of the lemon peel. It’s a fantastic rejuvenator and detoxifier. As a cleanser and purifier, it’s one of the best essential oils for eradicating any unwanted or negative toxins in the body, allowing your body to feel stimulated and energised. It improves your digestion, nourishes the skin and helps to drain the lymphatic system.

Bergamot

Bergamot is another citrus oil, coming from the rind of the bergamot orange fruit (most commonly found in earl grey tea). A busy lifestyle can often take its toll in the form of fatigue for many of us, and it’s important to look after ourselves during these times and keep our energy levels up and productivity high. Bergamot’s healing properties can alleviate headaches and stimulate hormonal and digestive systems, which will improve the overall vital energy throughout the body.

Respiratory health and refreshing

Eucalyptus

This essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree and is well known for helping to clear our airwaves when we’re feeling under the weather with blocked sinuses. It’s one of the best essential oils for healing thanks to its incredible anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and decongestion properties. Not only is it fantastic for inhaling when we’re not feeling our best, but Eucalyptus is also very cooling and refreshing, so it’s also a great oil to inhale in the morning to get your senses going and diminish any sluggishness ahead of your day.
